imgresDamage Surveys and Insurance Claims

Physical damage to your vessel is an unfortunate event.  Dealing with the insurance company and the claim process can be even a bigger event.

In most cases, the insurance company will send a representative who does  not have the proficiency in boat construction or repairs to serve you best.  Their proficiency is with doors, floors, walls, and roofs.  Vessels, no!   Although, sometimes an independent marine surveyor will be hired to work with them.  In this case, you should obviously know who’s side they are on!  Adjusting in the better interests of the insurance company the result.

When it comes to your vessel, it is best that you hire a surveryor from Mass Maritime Marine to represent your claim. Furthermore, sitting around waiting for a settlement in most cases causes more damage to your vessel.  Remember, continued damage takes place via either the elements which caused the damage.  Attrition to exposure is also a problem.

If your vessel is newer or of a later model that was seriously damaged, but it was not a total loss, being entitled to a certain quality of repair is your right.  Any and all repairs should not affect the value of the vessel! Most state laws entitle the owner to be made “whole.” Yet, understand that with a repaired vessel,  you will never be made, “whole”.  Eventually when you sell the boat.  And when you do,  you are technically selling “damaged goods”.    What does this mean?  It means that you really need to hire someone to oversee the repair to the boat.  Overseeing such repairs so that they are not detectable is most important because a damaged vessel, if properly repaired is not a damaged vessel anymore!  Sounds odd but with most fiberglass and composite boats, such a status can be achieved.  A properly repaired vessel is as good as new, when done by real professionals.  The repair could,  ”technically”  end up even better than new because a lot of materials had been renewed or replaced!  That is why you need a Mass Maritime Marine Surveyor.

Remember, when the boat is in someone else’s yard being repaired, what is said that will be done and what is done can be two different things! Regardless of this fact, your concern is to get your vessel back into ship shape and in the water! MMM is standing by to work as your surveyor and project manager.

Another concern regarding physical damage to your vessel is when is comes time to settle on a price for needed correct repairs.  This moment can lead to litigation issues and court appearances between the insurance company and you.   MMM, as  subject matter experts for the insured, puts the misunderstandings adrift to resolve the case.

images (5)MMM also handles warrantee claims.  If you purchased a new vessel or had modifications done with new components installed, insuring that the install was done properly and that the integrity of the vessel was not compromised is important to know.  At Mass Maritime Marine, we will help you work with the Dealer or MFG to rectify the difficulties or misunderstandings that may have evolved in the contract language.  Oh so true it is that repair facilities, dealers,  and marinas cause damage to the vessel while making repairs.  For a matter of convenience of installing a device, where for a matter of  time constraints, weather, manpower, etc,,,they sometimes error in using proper standards of practice.  For example:  during winterizing or hauling, the stands can cause structural damage that could go unnoticed. By simply painting the vessel in the spring, the owner would never know if a problem! Furthermore, damage to your engines or the hulls structure may not be recognized until after the boat is put back into the water. Then the minute you use it, you now own it!

Having someone oversee the repairs, hauling, and management of your interests will insure that all is done on the up and up. In the long run, this will save you time and money as well as protect your interest.
